Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency are set to start taking soil samples next week at the site of a former scrap yard near the intersection of Hulman Street and Prairieton Road.
The 39 acre site is owned by the City of Terre Haute and was given to the city at no cost last year by Sugar Creek Scrap.
Officials say that there are several 55-gallon drums and a couple of tanker trucks on the property.
Test results should be known in about two weeks but will require a little additional time to process. If there is hazardous waste, the EPA will handle the clean up.
The city is planning to use the property as part of the sewage treatment plant expansion.
