There has been a lot of interest lately in what oil might exist under the city of Terre Haute. 

So far this year three different oil companies have looked at drilling on the north side of Terre Haute. 

Several area residents have been concerned about the possible environmental impact especially if “fracking” was used. 

Hydraulic fracking uses high powered water and chemicals to extract the oil. 

Oil companies say that the technique, which has been used for quite a while is safe while environment groups are not so sure.

      Thursday night, the Terre Haute City Council passed a measure banning fracking in the city limits.
