At last night’s Terre Haute City Council meeting the council was asked to voice opposition to the proposed gay marriage ban in Indiana.

There is a proposal now in the state legislature to add a ban to gay marriage to the state constitution.

If it passes then that proposal will be on the November ballot for voters to decide.

City Councilman Todd Nation presented a resolution that asked the Council to say that they and they city were against the proposed amendment.

In the end the council didn’t voice an opinion because the council’s own rules forbid it.

The Terre Haute’s council rules say they cannot create an ordinance or resolution regarding a controversial issue that is not relevant to their powers.

Since this is a state constitutional matter it is out of the council’s hands.
